14/10/2026: Recreation
October marks Biketober, a month-long celebration of cycling across Auckland. Organised by Bike Auckland, the initiative encourages people of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes, try something new and explore their local communities.
Here in Rodney, we’re fortunate to have a wide range of mountain biking opportunities right on our doorstep. From purpose-built trails through forests to scenic rides across regional parks, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re an experienced rider or just getting started.
Give mountain biking a go at Ride Ātiu
As part of Biketober, the Rodney Community Team is inviting residents to explore one of our region’s hidden gems with Ride Ātiu, a free guided mountain biking experience on Sunday 18 October 2026.
Set on the shores of the Kaipara Harbour, Ātiu Creek Regional Park offers more than 800 hectares of rolling farmland, native bush and spectacular coastal views.
Delivered alongside Bigfoot Adventures, Ride Ātiu gives participants the opportunity to explore the park on a guided ride, with stops along the way to learn more about the surrounding landscape and environment.
Each session lasts approximately two hours and caters for mixed abilities. Bikes are provided, although participants are welcome to bring their own.
Whether you’re trying mountain biking for the first time, returning after a break or simply keen to explore somewhere new, Ride Ātiu is a great opportunity to experience what Rodney has to offer.
The event is part of Summer in Our Backyard, funded by the Rodney Local Board and delivered by the Rodney Community Team, helping locals discover the recreational opportunities in their own backyard.
Ride Ātiu is free, but places are limited. Book your spot : https://rodneycommunity.org.nz/listing/ride-atiu-free-guided-mountain-biking-summer-in-our-backyard/
Explore more of Rodney on two wheels
There’s plenty more mountain biking to discover across Rodney, and Biketober is a great opportunity to explore somewhere new.
For those who enjoy purpose-built trails, Woodhill Mountain Bike Park near Waimauku offers an extensive network of forest tracks for different abilities. Riverhead Forest provides another option, with a mix of gravel roads and more technical trails.
Further north, Dome Valley is also set to become a mountain biking destination, with Auckland Downhill developing a new mountain bike park.
Rodney’s regional parks offer a different riding experience. Tāwharanui Regional Park has designated cycling routes through its coastal landscape, while Te Rau Pūriri, Scandrett and Mahurangi East provide opportunities to explore open farmland and shared tracks. Wenderholm also permits cycling in certain areas, although riding options are limited.
Remember to check where cycling is permitted, along with track conditions and access requirements, before heading out.
