Free Tai Chi Classes for Seniors Underway in Kumeū

During term 2, seniors in the Kumeū area are being encouraged to give Tai Chi a try, with free weekly classes running at the Kumeū Community Centre, thanks to Community Facilitator Kyra Shaw-Toomey and funding from Rodney Local Board.

The classes are taught by Alison Thomas, a certified instructor with ACC’s Live Stronger for Longer programme — a national initiative aimed at reducing falls among older New Zealanders through evidence-based exercise.

Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese practice involving slow, flowing movements, has gained recognition in recent years as one of the more effective forms of exercise for older adults. Scientific research has shown the practice can reduce falls by up to 50 percent, alongside improvements in posture, balance and breathing. The gentle pace also makes it accessible to people who may find higher-impact exercise difficult.

Beyond the physical benefits, Tai Chi is known to strengthen muscles throughout the body and support mobility — both important factors in helping people stay independent as they age.

The Kumeū sessions are part of a broader push to make falls-prevention exercise more widely available in community settings, where cost and transport can otherwise be barriers for older participants.

Anyone interested in joining is asked to contact Alison directly for class times and further details.
