Free Workshop in Waimauku Tackles Food Waste at Home

A free community workshop aimed at helping households cut down on food waste will be held at Waimauku War Memorial Hall next month.

The Love Food Hate Waste session, running from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday 20 June 2026, will be facilitated by Pip from Compost Collective and focuses on practical ways to make better use of leftovers at home.

Food waste remains a significant issue in New Zealand households, with research showing that a substantial portion of what ends up in kitchen bins could have been eaten. Workshops like this one aim to address the problem at its source — the home kitchen — by giving people the skills and confidence to use up what they’ve already bought.

Attendees can expect to come away with tips on storing food so it lasts longer, creative ways to repurpose leftovers into new meals, and strategies for reducing both household waste and grocery bills. Participants are asked to bring a container along to take leftovers home.

The workshop is part of a wider Love Food Hate Waste programme supported by Auckland Council and delivered by Compost Collective, which runs similar sessions across the region throughout the year.

While the event is free, places are limited and booking is essential. Registration and further details are available through the Compost Collective website.
