The Rodney Community team is dedicated to increasing opportunities for Play, Youth & Recreation activities across Rodney.
Play and active recreation are a big part of life in Rodney. Play is usually free and unstructured, and it’s fundamental to how tāmariki and rangatahi learn and grow — happening in all sorts of ways, from traditional playgrounds to nature and cultural play experiences. Active recreation, the informal physical activity we fit into our days indoors and out, is becoming more popular with Aucklanders as life gets busier.

A new winter Out & About programme of free activities is coming soon with an increased focus on adult fitness and reaching smaller communities who may have been left out in the past. We will make sure to share the programme with you.
Two recent wins for me, were the success of the Adaptive Skate lessons delivered by Wellness Riders at Snells Beach and Kumeū and the Bluelight Fishing Program just delivered last week.
We had a great turnout for both Adaptive Skate events and we received awesome feedback from parents who really appreciated the inclusiveness of the classes and the opportunity to meet other parents in similar situations.
The Bluelight Fishing Program is an awesome example of community collaboration and generosity thanks to the many volunteers involved. It has been described as “awesome” and “amazing” by some of the young teens who participated. We have already had people inquiring about the next one!

Rodney Youth Project
A Rodney Local Board pilot-programme started in 2024, dedicated to increasing the number of youth activities across Rodney. For one year, we supported local providers to deliver accessible youth programmes & events available to all youth in Rodney aged 12 -18 years old. From Oct 2025, 19 new initiatives were funded by the Rodney Youth Small Project Fund.
Our team is proud to continue the work started under the Rodney Youth Project and will ensure rangatahi all over Rodney get access to free and low cost activities like those funded by the Rodney Youth Small Project Fund. Keep an eye out for the Rodney Youth badge to find free, local youth activities supported by us!
