Tiger Worms Take Centre Stage at Free Huapai Workshop for Kids

Young children in the Huapai area will get the chance to meet some unusual classroom helpers next month, when a free worm farming workshop comes to the Huapai Hub.

The hands-on session, running from 11am to midday on Sunday 12 April 2026, will be led by Pip from Compost Collective and is designed for children aged 3 to 8 and their whānau.

Worm farming has become an increasingly popular way for households to deal with food scraps, with tiger worms capable of turning kitchen waste into nutrient-rich fertiliser for gardens. The workshop introduces children to the worms themselves and explains, in age-appropriate ways, how the composting process works and why it matters for the environment.

The session is built around play and discovery, with hands-on activities giving children the chance to interact directly with the worms and learn through doing rather than watching. Organisers say the format suits curious young learners who want to get their hands a little dirty.

Each child attending must have their own ticket and be accompanied by an adult. Organisers ask families to register accurately, as numbers help them prepare enough materials and run the activities safely.

The workshop is one of a series of free sessions supported by Auckland Council and delivered by Compost Collective, which works to reduce household waste across the region by helping people compost at home. Our team, the Rodney Community team works with Auckland Council regional teams to help coordinate these activities.
