Helensville soup chats simmer into community connection

For six weeks, a Rodney Community initiative offering nothing more than homemade soup and a welcoming table has grown into something far bigger: a hub for local connection and grassroots support.

Community Soup Chats began as a simple idea—inviting residents and local organisations to share a weekly lunch. But organiser, Arwen Flowers says the gatherings quickly became a space where trust formed, relationships deepened, and practical help emerged organically, without formal referral processes.

In one example, a casual conversation about a friend moving into a new flat led to free plants from South Kaipara Good Food and access to a portable garden programme. Other attendees connected with Community Patrol, Citizens Advice Bureau, library staff, a Hospice representative and budgeting services—simply by sitting at the same table.

The event has also proven valuable for local organisations themselves, giving workers and volunteers a chance to step away from their day-to-day roles and build relationships with one another. Those connections have already sparked early conversations about future community health initiatives, skills groups and youth activities.

Beyond the practical outcomes, Arwen says the chats have revealed a strong local appetite for connection. Women spoke of wanting friendship and new skills; older residents shared experiences of retirement and adjusting to change; parents discussed raising children and building a more welcoming neighbourhood.

Each week, conversations have run well past the scheduled finish time, with attendees staying to help wash dishes and chat further.

Organisers say the soup itself was never really the point—it simply created the right conditions for people to slow down and talk.

The initiative is being held up as a reminder that community development doesn’t always require formal programmes or immediate results. Instead, organisers say, giving people time and space to meet and listen to one another can be enough to lay the groundwork for lasting collaboration.
