Lighting Up Warkworth for Matariki
This July, Warkworth is hosting its first ever Matariki Lantern Walk — a community event following the Mahurangi riverside boardwalk through town on Thursday 9 July 2026, thanks to the Rodney Community team and Warkworth Scouts.
Matariki marks the rise of the Pleiades star cluster and the beginning of the Māori New Year — a time traditionally used to reflect on those who have passed, acknowledge the present, and set intentions for the year ahead. Community lantern walks have become a popular way to mark the occasion across Aotearoa, and this year Warkworth is joining in for the first time. Now that work is complete on the beautiful new addition to the river boardwalk, this is the perfect way to enjoy it with family and friends.
The walk
Participants are invited to gather from 5:30pm at the start of the riverside boardwalk in Warkworth town centre, with the walk departing at 6pm. The route follows the boardwalk at an easy pace, finishing at the Masonic Hall. The light and sound installation across the river is due to run at the same time, creating an exciting and colourful experience for the little ones. The Warkworth Scouts will be there at the end with hot chocolates and a sausage sizzle (cash appreciated).
The route is pram-friendly and suitable for most mobility levels. Children are welcome with adult supervision. All local childcare centres have been informed and all families are invited. The event is particularly suitable for our youngest tamariki, as it is a short and straight forward activity.
What to bring
Bring a homemade lantern — free LED candles will be available on the night to place inside. Real flames aren’t permitted for safety reasons. A torch is useful for lighting the way along the route. If you’d like a sausage from the Scouts, bring some cash.
